The Commissioners Court unanimously approved a proposed exterior mural by the Friends of the Cook County Library at the July 28 meeting. Christy Everton, president of the friends group (present in the room), provided a rendering and told the court the friends group will fund the painting and prints; the county will not incur costs.
Commissioners asked whether any book titles depicted on the mural are on local “banned” lists; the project lead said the design intentionally avoids titles that have generated controversy in other places and focuses on universally familiar objects (dinosaurs, space imagery, unicorns and Texas authors) that appeal to children. The friends group intends to seek the county planning and zoning board’s sign-off before painting; staff said the mural will likely go before that board in September, as summer heat makes painting impractical on the building’s west side.
Commissioner Hollowell moved to approve the design; Commissioner Snuggs seconded. The motion passed 5–0. Commissioners noted that the friends group is paying for the work and that the group will coordinate with planning staff on timing and permitting.
