Council sends proposal to use vacant school buildings year-round for youth programming to Education Committee

A councilmember on July 8 asked the Common Council to consider using existing Buffalo Public School buildings to create year-round community programming and to provide free or low-cost space for community organizations that serve young people. The item was referred to the Education Committee for further discussion.

Speaking on the floor, the councilmember said Buffalo has multiple public school buildings currently vacant or under consideration for closure and argued the city should make those buildings available for community organizations that lack affordable space. "We have these properties. We have these resources. Let's make sure that these organizations who are working with our young people have somewhere to take them," the councilmember said.

The proposal was presented as a pilot concept; the councilmember said she had discussed the idea with the mayor and called for a citywide effort to repurpose school assets for youth programming. The council did not adopt specific implementation language or funding at the July 8 session; the motion recorded in the transcript was to send the proposal to the Education Committee where details — including which buildings, liability, custodial costs, and partnership agreements — would be developed.
