Resident questions process after preliminary vote to dissolve Solid Waste Management board

During public comment at the July 15 meeting, resident Susan Lockhart questioned county officials about the process used in preliminary votes to dissolve the Floyd County Solid Waste Management board and asked when competitive bids or comparisons would be posted for public review.

Lockhart said she did not see a comparison to a new company and that without a comparator there was no way to evaluate a value proposition. "If you have apple-to-oranges comparison, there was no other there was no one to compare the prices, products, and the services with," she said. She also asked when open bids would be posted to the county website.

A commissioner replied that the commission had already voted in favor of dissolution and that the council had taken a preliminary vote as well; the commissioner noted the council would hold a second vote at a joint meeting scheduled at 10:00 a.m. in this room and said there would likely be time for public comment before the council’s second vote. The commissioner offered to stay after the meeting to answer Lockhart’s questions in more detail.

Ending: Commissioners indicated the dissolution process had already begun and that additional public comment opportunities would likely occur at the council vote; county staff and officials offered to meet with Lockhart after the meeting to discuss her questions, and Lockhart said she would remain to speak further.
