Commissioners hear complaints of OHV users ignoring signs at Hans Peak; ask staff to consult law enforcement

Routt County commissioners discussed complaints from residents near Hans Peak who say off‑highway vehicle users frequently ignore signage and that law enforcement has issued warnings instead of citations, reducing deterrence.

A commissioner said constituents had asked for increased enforcement that results in tickets rather than warnings. The commissioner asked whether the board should reach out to law enforcement to determine current enforcement practices. Another commissioner replied that the sheriff (Doug) has been doing enforcement and recommended the chair contact him directly to confirm enforcement activity and whether ticketing is occurring.

The board did not direct a formal policy change but tasked staff to check with the sheriff’s office and report back to the commissioners and to affected residents about whether ticketing can be increased or other enforcement strategies are appropriate.
