County votes to submit three grant applications for youth services, senior transit and child passenger safety

Routt County commissioners on July 22 authorized county staff to submit three grant applications reviewed by the county’s grant review committee. The board approved: a $50,000 First Impressions application to the Craig Shechtman Family Foundation to support early‑childhood systems and educator professional development; a $157,000 Federal Transit Administration (FTA) Section 5310 rural operating grant application to replace an aging vehicle used by the Routt County Council on Aging (50/50 match); and a $9,925.76 Community Traffic Safety mini‑grant through the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment and CDOT to fund child passenger safety-seat distribution and CPST certification for staff. "This funding stream is trust‑based philanthropy and provides flexible spending," said a First Impressions presenter. The FTA 5310 application will cover 50 percent of the operating cost for a replacement vehicle; commissioners noted fleet electrification remains a longer‑term goal but that suitable 4‑wheel‑drive electric vehicles are not yet available for the county’s needs. The traffic safety mini‑grant requires quick expenditure — funds must be spent by September — and requires no local match. All three motions carried by voice vote after grant review committee recommendation.
