County staff notifies supervisors of upcoming civil service commission vacancy; appointment process clarified

The Franklin County Board of Supervisors was informed that a vacancy will open on the civil service commission Aug. 16 because a member will not seek reappointment.
County staff said the sheriff had spoken to potential replacements but had no takers. Supervisors were told that if they identify a willing candidate they should complete the application the board previously approved. Staff clarified which appointing authorities fill each of the three seats: two seats are appointed by the Board of Supervisors and one is appointed by the county attorney.
Why it matters: the civil service commission reviews certain sheriff’s office personnel matters, including hiring and vacancies; having appointed members in place is necessary for those duties.
Board members were asked to brainstorm candidates and, when they have a willing person, have that person complete the application. County staff said they would contact the county attorney to flag the seat that the county attorney appoints and to await any formal recommendation from her office. No appointment was made at the meeting.
