Town manager says Eversource changed plan, crews now working down Main Street; contractor knocked down decorative pole

Town Manager Paul Harrington told the board on June 16 that Eversource Gas made a late-scope change in its local project after core sampling showed median conditions unsuitable, moving construction out of the median and into Main Street travel lanes. Harrington said the town and businesses were not notified before crews began working in the center of Main Street.

Immediate impacts: Harrington said the change caused a contractor to topple a decorative light pole outside town hall; the contractor admitted fault, a police report was filed, and the contractor agreed to take responsibility for replacement. The town reported the pole’s electrical feed has been cut by the utility, and the contractor is working with Eversource on restoration.

Business and safety concerns: Board members and residents described narrower travel lanes, tight alleyways and collisions with vehicle mirrors in the project stretch, and said pedestrian traffic and storefront access appeared reduced. Harrington said he had expressed “displeasure” to Eversource about the change and that he would press for a corrective action plan and better communications.

Why it matters: The work affects traffic flow, pedestrian safety, business access and town streetscape items (banners, flag poles, decorative fixtures). Town staff said they will continue to document impacts, communicate with Eversource, and require replacement of damaged town property.
