The police chief reported that the city performed four speed studies on Mapleton Estates Drive following resident concerns raised at a prior meeting. The chief said the north‑end study where drivers drop off the hill recorded a Public Works average of 20 mph and the chief’s own count at that location was 23 mph. At the section near a recent crash, Public Works’ average speed was 17 mph and the chief’s was 15 mph.
The chief said the 80th‑percentile speed on the north drop was 24 mph and that the highest outlier speeds recorded were in the high 30s and low 40s. The chief noted the speed boxes used in the studies were placed where residents requested; Public Works and staff also placed sensors at a slightly different but comparable location to validate results.
Staff have provided the study data to a contact at Canyon (agency not specified) who asked follow‑up questions; staff said they expect to continue reviewing the findings and to respond to residents with follow‑up information. No ordinance change or new speed limit was adopted at the meeting; the council asked staff to continue monitoring and report findings.
