The commission and the mayor announced a free weekend at Parkwood Pool and highlighted a string of park upgrades across Wyandotte County during the Aug. 7 meeting.
Mayor Tyrone Garner and Commissioner Townsend praised the parks department’s recent work, saying the department had secured grants and completed improvements — from walking trails and refurbished courts to spray parks and upgraded locker rooms at Parkwood. “I believe that our parks, are absolutely second to none anywhere in the metropolitan area,” Garner said during remarks about the department’s investments.
Commissioner Townsend thanked lifeguards and staff and said the pool has nearly reached capacity on hot days. Commissioners volunteered to cover admission for the last weekend: Garner and Townsend said they would sponsor the first 100 swimmers over Saturday and Sunday, and other commissioners offered additional coverage. Commissioners asked parks director Angel Ferrer and foundation staff to track any extra donations through the parks foundation so funds remain accountable.
Parks improvements cited in the presentation included playground replacements, solar lighting, neighborhood park work, spray park openings, pickleball and basketball court refurbishments, and planning for police and fire facilities. Officials said many projects were grant‑funded and targeted historically underinvested neighborhoods.
Ending: City and county officials asked residents to visit refurbished parks and the Parkwood Pool last weekend of the season; the parks department said it will record attendance and account for donated funds through the parks foundation.
