Several residents urged the Unified Government to take stronger action against frequent illegal dumping sites along K‑32 during public comment on Aug. 7.
Kathleen Holton, who lives in Bonner Springs but drives through Kansas City, Kansas, told commissioners she regularly sees mattresses, boats, tires and household trash dumped along the roadway and asked whether cameras, signage or barricades could deter the activity. “It’s just shameful, the trash, the appliances, tires, mattresses, boats, anything you can think of that people dump alongside the road,” Holton said.
Commissioner Burns said he personally called public works after seeing dumped items and that crews had not yet removed everything. “They had two days to do it, and they didn't do it,” Burns said, and he asked the county administrator to direct public works to clean the site and to consider sheriff or police nighttime enforcement to deter repeat offenders.
Administrator David Johnston and staff acknowledged the complaints, and commissioners encouraged residents to report illegal dumping through the 311 system so crews can document and schedule removal. Burns also noted prosecution is underway in some cases and said officials are coordinating with law enforcement to hold dumpers accountable.
Ending: Commissioners asked public works to follow up on the specific site mentioned and indicated coordination with law enforcement to increase enforcement where dumping is habitual.
