Committee members raised questions on June 4 about how the village of Diamond's growth might affect county law-enforcement resources and whether the town’s contract with the sheriff should be adjusted.
Sheriff Briley told the committee, “we currently, currently we receive about $116,000 a year from Diamond, for police services for the portion of Diamond that's in Grundy County.” He said much of Diamond is in Will County, where Will County provides policing for that side, and that the county had not observed a clear increase in call volume attributable to the opening of a Jewel store on the Will County side.
Committee members asked whether the contract amounts and call volumes should be revisited; the sheriff said the county and mayors had renegotiated contract amounts in recent years and that the county could review a multiyear window of activity (suggested three years) to assess impact. He also recalled a prior negotiation with municipal leaders that produced a longer-term contract with annual percentage increases to help towns budget for escalations.
No change to contracts or formal direction to staff to renegotiate was recorded at the meeting; committee members asked staff to gather data so the matter can be reviewed. The discussion was exploratory and did not produce a formal vote.
