Resident warns council that removing Saguaro Ranch peacocks could push coyotes into neighborhoods

Rory Gorey of the Ocotillo District told the council Aug. 12 that removing peacocks from Saguaro Ranch could displace coyotes and increase risks to neighborhood pets, and he asked the city to notify residents and provide guidance on protecting animals.

Gorey said he volunteers with the historical society at the ranch and regularly sees coyotes there. "When they start running out of their food source, which is sometimes the peacocks, they're gonna start looking elsewhere," Gorey told the council, adding that residents should be alerted and given advice about protecting pets.

He said he heard the council discuss removing the peacocks during a workshop earlier in the day and urged officials to plan outreach to neighbors if the animals are relocated.

No council action or staff response was recorded during the public comment portion of the Aug. 12 meeting.
