District begins outreach on school cell‑phone rules; staff to develop policy options

District administrators provided a brief progress report on efforts to update the district cell‑phone policy at the July 30 board meeting. Staff reported they had held listening sessions during summer school with students and staff to gather input on where the district has discretion and where policy is constrained.

Administrators said staff and students want clear, consistent expectations in place for the fall to avoid mid‑year changes that could undermine implementation. The district is also coordinating with a regional ESD group that offers an engagement process the district may use to gather faster stakeholder input.

Staff said they expect sample policy language from OSBA and will await that guidance before bringing a draft for board consideration; some implementation approaches could have modest budget implications but staff said they will aim to minimize costs. The board and staff discussed a timeline in which a policy would be adopted by October and implemented in January to allow time for communication and staff training.

No policy was adopted at the meeting; staff will continue outreach and return with draft policy language once OSBA guidance and stakeholder input are compiled.
