Board plans regular district features with the Redmond Spokesman; staff to coordinate calendar and copy review

Board members discussed a proposed regular feature in the Redmond Spokesman that would spotlight district programs and board-member interests. The idea is for the district and rotating board members to provide unified, informational pieces timed to district initiatives or events.

Members said the features should support district messaging and suggested aligning topics with the district's calendar (for example, timing a library-focused piece with Read Across America Week). The superintendent and communications staff were asked to meet with the newspaper's representative (Tim) and to return to the board with a proposed calendar, deadlines for copy and a process for staff review of drafts.

Board members emphasized that the district chair is the board's designated spokesperson under the board/superintendent relationship document and asked that published pieces reflect the board-as-a-whole while allowing individual board members to highlight personal interests within that framework. Communications staff agreed to coordinate timing, involve program staff and, where appropriate, include students (photography or performing-arts examples were suggested) to make features engaging.

The board directed staff to report back after the communications meeting and to circulate options so members can submit a list of interests and agree on a calendar before voting on the communications goal at the next meeting.
