Board agrees to shared professional-development plan; will pair recorded webinars with short work-session discussions

The board endorsed a professional-development goal that would have trustees complete shared training three times per year and use brief work-session time for guided discussion. Members suggested a mix of recorded webinars (viewed before the meeting) and one in-person half-day training; the Oregon School Boards Association (OSBA) Leadership Institute was discussed as a likely source of courses.

Board members favored a structure that allows flexible, on-demand webinar viewing and a defined discussion time during a work session (proposed half-hour slots in October, January and March), rather than using agenda time intended for board business. Staff agreed to review OSBA offerings, circulate course options and create discussion prompts or short facilitation materials for each session. The board asked Gina (board staff) to circulate scheduling options and to coordinate with staff who could facilitate or provide discussion frameworks.

Trustees discussed pursuing a certificate track as an optional individual goal but emphasized the immediate objective: shared training to encourage common understanding of governance practices. The board agreed staff would develop a schedule and proposed program options and return with details for approval.
