Board authorizes surplus sale of Wilderness Challenge program kayaks and trailer with $100 minimum

The Sierra County Board of Supervisors approved a resolution to declare remaining equipment from the county's former Wilderness Challenge program as surplus and to offer the items for sale with a low minimum bid.

Staff said the equipment—six kayaks, five paddles and a trailer—had been declared surplus previously, but some items remained in county inventory and were deteriorating. Don Yaege, a former program participant and manager, asked the board to dispose of the equipment so local groups such as the Boy Scouts or youth programs could reuse it.

Supervisors discussed whether to sell items individually or as a group. Board members favored selling the assembled kit (trailered kayaks and accessories) to increase the chances a nonprofit or community program could acquire and use the gear. The board set a minimum bid of $100 and directed staff to list the items on the county's online surplus auction platform rather than conducting a sealed-bid process.

The board voted in favor of the resolution; staff said they would proceed with the surplus posting and disposal process.
