Council approves sign variance allowing Wendy’s logo on building sides and monument sign

The Youngsville City Council approved a sign variance for a new Wendy’s franchise on Sherman Metairie Parkway that will allow the company’s trademark face logo on both side elevations in addition to a front‑facing sign and a monument sign.

Stacy Landry of Deep South Signs presented the application and said the proposal included one front elevation sign (29.53 square feet) and two side cameo logos (each 13.27 square feet). She said the monument sign had been downsized twice during internal review and measured about 6.5 feet wide and 7 feet tall.

Council and staff discussed the monument base, berming and whether certain service signage — such as menu boards and pick‑up signs — required separate compliance review. Landry said drive‑through menu boards and door‑over signage would comply with existing rules and were not seeking variances tonight.

The motion to approve the variances was made by Councilmember Romero and seconded by Councilmember Bolgiano. After public comment and a roll call, the council approved the motion.

Why it matters: the vote clears a step in the permitting process for a new commercial development that councilmembers said would bring jobs and commercial activity to the area. Staff noted the applicant had iterated with the city to reduce sign sizes prior to the council hearing.

Conditions/clarifications: staff and the applicant confirmed that drive‑through menu boards and door signage must meet code and would be checked during permitting. The monument sign measurement and the one‑foot base were discussed during review and the council approved the variance as presented.
