Resident presses Hutchinson council on neighbor’s yard: pallets, electric fence and outhouse cited

During the public-comment period at the Aug. 5 Hutchinson City Council meeting, resident Nancy Thomas of 1815 Harrison described longstanding property-maintenance issues at a neighboring parcel that she says have created pest problems and safety concerns.

Thomas said the neighbor had stacked pallets up to 15–18 feet high, stored fence sections and left an outhouse adjacent to her fence line. She described seeing rodents and other pests emerge from the stacked wood and said code enforcement had made visits over time but the owner had not removed all the material. Thomas asked the council to take further action; a council member and staff said they were familiar with the property and would look into the matter.

Why it matters: Neighborhood maintenance and abandoned materials can create pest, fire and safety hazards and can spread blight. Thomas asked for city attention to enforce existing codes and remove unsafe material.
