Members of the Youth City Council discussed holding a coordinated food drive that would involve schools and the broader community and unanimously approved a motion to hold a study session to plan the effort.
Students proposed using school morning assemblies and posters, placing collection boxes in school buildings, and using social media and community drop-off sites to expand participation beyond families. One student suggested coordinating with principals and running an in-school collection during school hours; another recommended additional public drop-off points for residents without school ties.
After several speakers requested a planning meeting, a youth council member moved to hold a study session; another member seconded the motion and the council voted. The roll call recorded Wellington, Holtz, Lemonyan and Moseley voting yes and the chair declaring the study session set. The council said it would develop a plan and report back at the next meeting.
The study session was described as an opportunity to work out target recipient organizations, collection sites, timing, publicity and whether the session should be open to public comment. Council members asked staff to confirm whether an open study session was permitted and to bring more information to a future meeting.
