Commissioners approve vehicle lease program with Enterprise Fleet Management to reduce costs

Currituck County commissioners approved a lease agreement with Enterprise Fleet Management as part of the FY2026 budget direction to lease rather than purchase some county vehicles.

County staff told the board the move is intended to improve fleet fuel efficiency, lower maintenance costs and reduce the county’s overall vehicle inventory. Managers said projected savings over a multi‑year period could be significant depending on the number of vehicles leased; staff estimated substantial savings over a ten‑year horizon but said the exact amount depends on final vehicle counts and lease terms.

Commissioners also confirmed the county would reduce the number of owned vehicles made available through public auction and that staff will pursue the contractual steps required to implement the leasing program. The board voted to approve the lease agreement and directed staff to move forward with the procurement and fleet‑right‑sizing steps described at the work session on the subject.
