Council accepts recycled-plastic park bench donated by suicide-prevention nonprofit

WHEELER, Ore. — The Wheeler City Council accepted a donation of a park bench on Aug. 19 from the suicide-prevention nonprofit Hubs PAC. The bench is made through a Trex recycling program that converts thin-film plastics into park benches.

Laura Swanson, representing Hubs PAC, said the first bench had been placed in Newellum City Park earlier in the year and the second bench is ready; volunteers will work with public works staff on placement and assembly. Swanson said officials hoped to place the bench in Upper Park in September to coincide with Suicide Awareness and Prevention Month and that the bench would include a plaque noting the national suicide-prevention number 988.

Councilors moved and seconded acceptance of the bench; the motion passed during the meeting. Staff will coordinate placement with the public works department.
