The City Council on May 5 passed a unanimous resolution asking the Houston-Galveston Area Council (HGAC) to consider the Fort Bend Toll Road alignment as the preferred alternative in the US 90A corridor study and to account for future population growth in Missouri City.
The resolution matters because the study will guide regional transit planning and potential future funding priorities that could affect how Missouri City connects to employment centers such as the Texas Medical Center.
City staff presenter Shashi described the study area and the alternatives evaluated. She said HGAC initially considered five alignments but that the Union Pacific railroad option was not viable because the railroad was not willing to participate. That left three alternatives under consideration; the alignment the city supports — shown in the study exhibit as the green alignment — would follow the Fort Bend Toll Road and include multiple stops in Missouri City. "The alignment which we believe is more beneficial to Missouri City, the Fort Bend Toll Road alignment, is currently ranked number 3," she said, and urged evaluators to consider the city's future population growth when advancing the study.
Council members asked how the resolution affects residents financially and whether the alignment could be expanded along Highway 90 without returning to council. Shashi said the project is at the concept stage and currently unfunded; such regional projects are typically incorporated into a transportation improvement program and then seek federal funds. She added that any expansion or substantive change would come back to council for approval.
Council member Boney moved approval; Council member Oterkirk seconded. The motion carried unanimously.
The resolution and an accompanying staff letter will be submitted to HGAC; staff said the council's action requests that HGAC consider Missouri City's growth and the green alignment as the study advances and funding opportunities are pursued.
