The Village of Homer Glen’s Ability Awareness Committee recognized third‑grader Amelia Burbank and presented a donation on her behalf for inclusive playground equipment at Schilling Elementary School.
Teresa Cassandra, speaking for the Ability Awareness Committee, described how Amelia identified that the school playground was not fully accessible and organized a fundraising effort with school and committee support to raise money for equipment that students who use wheelchairs can use. "Her passion and determination have made a real difference in our community," Cassandra said.
Amelia personally raised funds and the committee presented an additional donation of $1,800 to support inclusive playground equipment; Amelia told the trustees she had met her personal fundraising goal of $10,000. The mayor and trustees praised Amelia’s efforts and the Ability Awareness Committee’s work to promote inclusion.
Discussion only: the item was a ceremonial recognition and donation; no formal policy action was taken. Trustees thanked Amelia and the committee and encouraged community support for inclusive play spaces.
