The Escambia County School Board on Aug. 19 defeated a motion to amend School Board Resolution 2025-1 after a divided discussion about whether a referendum should appear on the primary or general-election ballot.
Board member discussion centered on turnout and fairness. One board member said placing the referendum on the general election would yield a "wider variety of snapshot of the entire community" because general elections draw more voters; another said keeping the established schedule was best because the measure narrowly passed previously amid heavy special-interest spending.
The chair asked for a roll-call vote after restating the motion; the tally was 2 in favor and 3 opposed, and the motion failed. No further action on that resolution was taken at the meeting.
Board members who opposed the amendment cited prior narrow passage and the influence of special-interest campaigning; supporters said shifting the referendum to a general-election ballot would increase participation and better reflect community sentiment.
The motion's failure means the resolution remained in its prior form as of the close of the meeting; no new referendum timing was adopted.
