Commission approves replacement of two HVAC units at Riceboro Youth Center; city will split cost

Liberty County commissioners approved a contract to replace two 25-ton HVAC units at the Riceboro Youth Center and authorized the county to split the expense with the City of Riceboro.

Facilities staff presented three quotes; Georgia Heating & Air submitted a $114,000 proposal to replace both units and to repair associated ductwork. The county received another competitive quote from ThermoServe at about $115,000; a third quote was for a single unit only.

Facilities staff said the youth center requires frequent refrigerant recharges and temporary measures to keep one unit operating; a full replacement will reduce recurring service interruptions. "They came in at a 115,000. And then we had Georgia's Heating and Air... came in at a 114,000," a facilities staff member said, summarizing the comparative bids.

Commissioners approved the Georgia Heating & Air bid and directed county staff to invoice the City of Riceboro for its 50% share under a previously discussed cost-sharing arrangement.

What happens next: Staff will issue a notice to proceed after contract documentation is complete and will coordinate with Riceboro on payment timing and invoicing. Facilities indicated an expected equipment lead time of about six weeks from contract award.
