Councilmember reports Strongsville schools face funding uncertainty; board member resigns

Councilmember Carbone reported to Strongsville City Council on June 2 about recent Strongsville school board business, including nearly 20 staff retirements, recognition of a National Merit Scholarship finalist and 2025 DECA qualifiers, and presentation of the district’s five-year forecast by Treasurer George Agonesse.

Carbone told council that Treasurer Agonesse emphasized potential changes in Columbus to state school funding and urged vigilance: "We really should be mindful what is taking place in Columbus with state funding," Carbone said, paraphrasing the treasurer’s concerns that proposed changes could hinder how local schools are funded.

Carbone also reported that board member Sharon Kilbane resigned for personal reasons. He said applications for the vacancy closed on the day of his report and that the board would begin scheduling interviews. Carbone closed his report with a summer safety reminder to residents to watch for children riding e-bikes, scooters and similar devices in neighborhoods.

The council did not take formal action on school board staffing or budgeting at the June 2 meeting; Carbone presented the report as information to the body.
