Student 1, a WEB leader at Hohman Middle School, said the program helps sixth-graders feel more comfortable when they start middle school. "Being at Willyere has been very cool experience because I've gotten to know some pretty cool people, gotten to learn about leadership, and help people, sixth graders, specifically, to get more comfortable in middle school," Student 1 said.
Student 2, also a WEB leader, said the role is focused on welcoming new students and helping them belong. "Me, being a Webb leader, it means to help the kids feel more welcome and feel like they belong here in the Hohman Middle School," Student 2 said. "To me, I think Webb is super cool because, it helps the sixth graders have an easier time coming into the middle school. They don't have to go through the long process of trying to make new friends and trying to feel welcome and feel like they belong."
Student 3 explained the program acronym and described what leaders do for sixth-graders. "Webb stands for where everyone belongs. It's making everyone kind of belong in the middle school and allowing them to feel like they're supposed to be here," Student 3 said. "You get to introduce the sixth graders to the middle school and tell them all about it and give them your experiences, and you really it feel makes you feel like a leader in their book."
All three students described observing a change in the sixth-graders they helped. "It's pretty cool to see them come in as shy and, just kinda timid, but leaving as confident, active, fun sixth graders," Student 1 said. The students framed the WEB leader role as an opportunity to learn leadership while helping younger classmates meet people and adjust to middle school.
