The Oviedo Public Arts Board voted Wednesday evening to forward its four highest-scoring submissions from a recent call to artists for an “Arts and Entertainment” logo to the City Council for final selection.
Staff opened the discussion saying, “Tonight, we are doing the voting on the call to artist for the arts and entertainment logo,” and noting the city would receive the board’s recommendations to the council, which is expected to consider the item in mid-September.
Board members spent the meeting reviewing scoring sheets, comparing the top entries and raising practical concerns about how each design would reproduce on small items such as cups and stickers, and in single-color (monochrome) printing. One staff presenter told the board, “It’s really our job to have designs that work well either way,” referring to color and single-color reproduction.
The board discussed specific design questions: whether logos should include multiple visual elements that might be lost at small scales; whether palm-tree imagery should be replaced by an orange tree to reflect local history; and whether highly detailed designs would shrink legibly for merchandise. Staff said decisions about full-color versus single-color printing would be made later by the City Council and by participating businesses that would pay for cups and other items.
After concluding discussion, a board member moved — and another seconded — that the board forward its four top-ranked submissions rather than the three submissions staff had initially proposed. The motion passed on a voice vote; no roll-call tally was recorded in the meeting minutes.
Board members also debated whether to invite the shortlisted artists back for brief interviews. Staff told the board that minor revisions and clarifications often are resolved during the post-selection negotiation process and that the city could contact artists by email if questions arise. The board asked staff to compile any common questions or requested tweaks for each shortlisted design to include with the packet sent to council.
The board closed the item by confirming that the city would present the board’s ranked recommendations to the City Council for final action; the council will also weigh cost and production issues tied to the program. No final artist was chosen at the board meeting.
