Council eyes ending current garbage contract and weighs landfill options as contract nears renewal window

At the Aug. 12 workshop Munhall Borough councilors reviewed the borough’s existing garbage-collection contract — signed in 2020 for seven years and with an auto-renewal provision — and discussed whether to seek alternatives ahead of the contract’s end date in January 2027.

Staff and councilors told residents the contract contains an automatic renewal clause; a staff speaker suggested the borough’s solicitor should review the contract to identify notice periods and financial obligations before any decision. Council agreed to place a solicitor contract-review item on a future council agenda.

Separately, staff reported the borough’s current disposal vendor is nearing capacity at its primary landfill. Staff said Waste Management had suggested the borough use an alternative South Park landfill at about $57 per ton; another landfill option discussed in conversation could return a quoted $45 per ton, but staff said distance and DOT routing issues were considerations for truck crews. Councilors said they expected to have at least six months next year to evaluate options and to notify the current contractor in the required time window if council chooses not to renew.

Ending: Council asked the solicitor to review current contracts, directed staff to map contract notice deadlines and landfill options, and signaled interest in evaluating in-house or alternative collection models before the auto-renewal period.
