Legislature refers countywide landfill resolution to environment committee, backing diversion alternatives

Aug. 19, 2025 — The Ulster County Legislature unanimously adopted a motion to refer a resolution opposing the establishment of a countywide landfill anywhere within Ulster County to the Energy, Environment & Sustainability Committee for further consideration.

The resolution, introduced on Aug. 19, states opposition to siting a countywide landfill within the geographical boundaries of Ulster County and urges county and regional officials to explore alternative sites and waste‑management solutions. Legislator Hewitt moved that the resolution be referred to the Energy, Environment & Sustainability Committee; the motion passed 22-0.

During floor discussion Legislator Collins framed the issue around waste diversion goals, saying the focus is on measures to “divert as much waste as possible before we consider this,” and committee discussion will examine options including increased recycling, composting and other diversion strategies. Supporters said referral to committee would allow the Legislature to study alternatives and develop policy responses rather than immediately endorsing a siting decision.

The referral does not adopt a countywide ban or an ordinance; it sends the resolution for committee review and potential recommendations to the full Legislature.
