Grant County sheriff announces internal probe; New Mexico State Police file charges in alleged overtime fraud

Grant County Sheriff (name given in meeting as “Sheriff”) told the commissioners on Aug. 14 that the sheriff’s office opened an internal investigation after being notified of possible public‑fund misuse related to drought/fire overtime.

“As investigation progressed, the New Mexico State Police were notified to investigate the allegations and potential criminal offenses,” the sheriff said. He told the commission that the state police “have filed charges on the deputy involved.”

The sheriff said the matter remains the subject of an ongoing internal investigation and that personnel details would not be released while processes proceed. “Any allegations of misconduct will not be tolerated,” he said, adding that his office must follow policies, procedures and due process.

Commissioners did not request additional public action during the meeting; the sheriff said he would ensure proper handling and discipline if warranted.
