Freshman Taylor Washington qualifies for state in triple jump; board recognizes athlete

Harlem School District honored freshman athlete Taylor Washington at its July 15 board meeting after she qualified for the state track meet in the triple jump.

Coach Dotson told the board Washington transitioned from gymnastics to track and field and quickly improved in jumping events. Dotson said Washington placed sixth at the indoor conference meet, then dedicated herself to triple jump after outdoor season began, improving "a foot better" several weeks in a row and ultimately jumping 36 feet, 3 inches — a mark that made her the conference champion and a state qualifier.

Dotson emphasized Washington’s rapid progress: as a freshman she finished ahead of several experienced competitors, became the program’s first state qualifier in two years and moved to No. 2 all-time in school history behind a previous state medalist. Board members praised Washington and the coaching staff during the recognition.

Why it matters: Board members said the recognition highlights student achievement in athletics and the role of coaches in developing talent. The district plans to present a plaque and invited Washington and her family to the meeting for formal recognition.
