Park board discusses maintenance needs, pavilion repairs and pickleball sign fundraising

Park board members and staff discussed a range of maintenance and small capital items at the Sept. 9 park board meeting, including repairs to doors and decking at a pavilion, outdoor restroom repairs, potential sewer heat-tape installation, and replacement quotes for a mower.

Why it matters: Board members said some shelter doors allow snow to blow into the kitchen and require replacement, deck lattice and boards need repair, and two outdoor restrooms have been broken for an extended period. Staff also raised sewer-freezing concerns and discussed heat-tape and tank-heater options to prevent winter freeze-ups.

Mower replacement: The board reviewed quotes from a local vendor for a mower. One quoted model (no steering wheel) was priced at $22,050; another model with additional features was roughly $28,050 before any trade-in. Board members discussed hours on the current machine (about 700–750 hours) and whether to postpone replacement while land-use decisions remain unsettled.

Pickleball court and fundraising: Staff reported the new pickleball court is completed and in use. Local volunteers are raising funds for a large sign; speakers said the group has raised roughly $30,000 in estimates for the sign. Board members said they will continue to support finishing touches as fundraising allows.

Other directions: The board authorized staff to arrange door replacements and directed maintenance staff to prioritize presentable repairs while larger project decisions are on hold. No large capital appropriation was approved at the meeting.
