The Morton County Commission on June 24 approved negotiated offers totaling $4,060.44 to purchase permanent right-of-way, small temporary easements and a maintenance easement for two bridge replacement projects.
Why it matters: Land purchases and easements are required to replace bridges and to provide permanent access for maintenance. County staff said the acquisitions followed North Dakota Department of Transportation and federal requirements for right-of-way purchase, including valuation based on prior sales and the county’s approved policy.
County highway staff described the transaction as one project with two bridges; each bridge has a property owner on each side, a permanent right-of-way, and a small temporary easement. The bridge at Chondepeda Creek also included a permanent maintenance easement to allow county crews to clear drift and sediment beyond the roadbed. Staff reported the temporary easements were compensated at the minimum ($300 each) and that the permanent compensation was set using previously approved methods.
Commissioners asked to record the bridge numbers; staff provided bridge IDs for the record and said the work has been budgeted. The commission approved the offers for bridges numbered in the record (as given by staff) by roll call.
Next steps: Staff will complete paperwork and record easements; bridge replacement work will proceed under the county’s bridge program in accordance with DOT guidance and applicable funding and bidding timelines.
