Burke County approves multiple hiring actions, approves advertisement to fill vacant positions

Burke County commissioners approved several personnel actions, including hiring and authorizing advertisements to fill multiple positions across county departments.

The board approved hiring three correctional officers for the detention center to fill vacancies. Commissioners also approved advertising and filling a heavy equipment operator position for the roads and bridges department; staff confirmed funds were available. The board voted to advertise three laborer positions — two part-time positions for convenience centers (Sardis and Midville) and one full-time road-department laborer — and authorized advertising to fill a vacant IT specialist position at the library; staff said budgeted funds were available for each vacancy or that funds would cover the positions through the fiscal year.

Commissioners said the convenience centers would continue to be staffed Friday and Saturday only and that the county is already using one existing employee at Dyes Crossroads. Commissioner Bridal moved to advertise and fill the positions; Commissioner Lively seconded and the motions passed.

Why it matters: these hires affect county operations from detention staffing to road maintenance, convenience-center operations and library IT support. Staff said the positions are budgeted for the current fiscal year.

Next steps: Human Resources will post job advertisements and proceed with recruitment and hiring according to county hiring practices.
