Sioux City to endorse National Fitness Campaign installation at Railroad Museum campus

A resolution on the city's consent agenda would endorse a National Fitness Campaign project on the Sioux City Railroad Museum campus and authorize city assistance for the installation of an outdoor fitness court.

Larry Obermeyer, representing the Siouxland Story & Railroad or Railroad Museum project, described a proposed flat exercise pad "approximately 70 feet long by 30 feet wide" that would include an exercise mural in the center and body-weight fitness stations on one side and a studio space for small classes on the other. "We were approached with the idea of bringing this national fitness campaign studio to Sioux City," Obermeyer said, and noted city staff would have no financial obligation beyond permitting and code compliance.

Obermeyer said the overall project is a roughly $200,000 investment with a $30,000 grant component; sponsors and additional grants are being sought to cover the remainder. He told councilors the fitness court would serve campground and trail users and be an amenity for upscale RV campers and trail riders.

The resolution was placed on the consent agenda along with multiple other routine items. Staff and councilors described the fitness court as complementary to the museum campus's trail loop and campground development. The consent agenda passed as proposed unless a council member requested separate consideration.
