City opens modern tier‑3 data center, moves production equipment out of flood plain

Dubuque city officials premiered the city’s new tier‑3 data center and Information Technology Department offices, saying the move improves redundancy, cybersecurity and disaster resilience for municipal systems.
Mayor Cavanagh and IT staff presented a short video and description outlining the facility’s specifications: about 1,000 square feet of tier‑3 data center space, a 100 kilowatt electrical load capacity, multiple internet service provider connections and fiber paths, whole‑room battery backup, three efficient cooling units, a new fire suppression system and a generator that can power the complete building. The new production site is now located miles away from the city’s disaster‑recovery site, replacing prior arrangements that placed the two locations only blocks apart and that kept production equipment in a basement that lies in a flood plain.
IT staff said the facility also offers extra capacity for municipal expansion and for local businesses or organizations seeking leased space. The council received the ribbon‑cutting video and praised the project as an investment in cybersecurity and continuity of government systems.
