Board approves winter-weather waiver allowing earlier start; exact 2026–27 calendar to be developed

The Swain County Board of Education unanimously approved a winter-weather waiver that the superintendent said would allow the district to start classes earlier than some other systems while remaining within state calendar law.

The superintendent told the board such waivers let districts adjust start dates when they have missed scheduled days in the school calendar in prior years; she said the district’s waiver would allow schools to start on Aug. 17. She noted the waiver must be submitted to the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction by Aug. 15 and said that how the 2026–27 calendar will look “is not specified” and will require additional information.
