John Lowe provided facility and project updates to the Board of Education on Aug. 20, reporting completion of lead and water sampling submissions under the Clean Classrooms for Carolina Kids program and that required remediations were limited.
Lowe said the remediation work was mainly small repairs and that program partners replaced certain older water fountains at no cost to the district. He noted asbestos documentation is complete at every site except the Butler Avenue multipurpose building, where the district needs a statement from the original architect confirming the absence of asbestos‑containing materials; the architect is no longer working with the firm. Lead‑based paint testing results were submitted Aug. 12 and Lowe described findings as limited to small areas at a few sites.
Project updates included completion of L.C. Carr’s 300‑hall roof replacement aside from ground leveling and final inspection; installation of insulated panels on Sunset Avenue’s auditorium canopy and progress on canopy metal panels; and a delayed shipment of windows for Sunset that, if received, the contractor planned to install after school hours. Lowe said crews expect to repair roof blisters and heat‑seam the roof area as the next steps.
No formal board action was taken; the report was informational and staff said they will return with required documentation and schedule final inspections.
