The Marshalltown Community School District Board approved a request to hold the high school homecoming parade on a Wednesday this fall, 5-0.
Athletic director (presenter) told the board the Iowa High School Athletic Association controls the football schedule and the district received limited home-game dates. This year’s schedule created a conflict with the district’s major Bobcat cross-country meet, which draws roughly 2,500 runners and thousands of spectators and requires extensive public-safety coordination with police and fire. The cross-country meet is held on Thursday in the same timeframe the district traditionally runs its homecoming parade, the presenter said.
The presenter said he met with the local ministerial association to discuss a Wednesday parade and reported the group was supportive. Board members discussed district policy encouraging accommodation of religious observances and the school calendar; one board member noted the policy is not an absolute ban on Wednesday events. After a motion to approve, the board voted unanimously to allow the Wednesday homecoming parade.
The presenter said the district planned the homecoming date to align with the football opponent (Mason City) and the broader season and that the request will allow the district to avoid the large cross-country event and parent–teacher conference conflicts that earlier calendar options created.
