Kent Black Action Commission urges transparency in police hiring, oversight and community engagement

Gwen Allen Carson, speaking for the Kent Black Action Commission during public comment on Tuesday, urged the Kent City Council to increase transparency in police hiring and accountability processes and to expand community engagement. "Our community has shared concerns regarding the hiring practices of the Kent Police Department, the standards of accountability for officers, and the transparency of disciplinary processes," Carson said.

Carson asked for clearer information on how background checks are conducted, how past misconduct is considered when hiring, and how the department works with the Washington State Criminal Justice Commission on certification. She called for the council to "explore ways to strengthen independent oversight, expand community police dialogues, and ensure that community concerns lead to meaningful action."

Carson also emphasized that safety extends beyond policing: she pressed the council to address housing affordability, youth engagement programs and mental‑health resources as part of a holistic public‑safety approach. The remarks came during the public comment period; no formal council action or vote followed the statement.
