Council okays contract award for secure fencing around vacated street segment

The City Council authorized staff to award a contract for secure fencing on a vacated segment of roadway, a project staff said is intended to protect officers and close off an area that has seen trespass and sanitation issues. Assistant Public Works Director Aaron Nix briefed the council on bids received and said design is complete and construction can begin once the contract is awarded.

Nix said the project carries a design estimate in the neighborhood of $393,000, with approximately $200,000 covered by a grant and other local funds budgeted in prior years. He said final budget allocations and a prior $50,000 equipment purchase the council approved would complement the hard‑infrastructure work.

Staff reported signage and public outreach had begun, and council members said they had received notices; staff said they mailed notices and posted signs in the area. No public comment was recorded on the item at this meeting. The council adopted the resolution authorizing the city manager to execute the contract and related purchase orders, enabling staff to proceed to construction.

Council approved the resolution and staff said they will return with construction scheduling and contractor details as the contract and procurement documents are executed.
