Staff explains limits of recent Hazel Lane safe‑routes work; expanded sidewalk and crosswalks remain under study

A resident asked BPAC about extending Safe Routes to School markings and a crosswalk on Hazel Lane near Sunrise Elementary. City staff said the recent striping was part of an emergency transportation project and could not be extended because of right‑of‑way limits and local opposition to removing parking.

Tommy, a city staff member, said engineers and fire department reviewers required certain clearances and treatments that constrained what could be installed in the narrow corridor. He said there was “not enough right away between Gillespie and your street to continue that lane striping” and that continuing the stripe would have required removing parking across from Riverside and other changes.

Staff characterized the recent work as an interim measure tied to emergency project funding and said the longer‑term remedy is a tier‑1 sidewalk project on Hazel that is planned for implementation in the near future. The staff explanation noted that the current striping improves visibility but does not fully provide a protected route because missing sidewalks and parking impacts remain.

Resident Ethan Tate thanked staff and indicated he would follow up offline about additional local measures. There was no formal action; staff and the resident agreed to continue discussions and consider additional crossings as part of the larger Hazel sidewalk project.

The committee recorded that crosswalk and striping decisions near Sunrise Elementary will remain part of ongoing Safe Routes to School planning and the Hazel tier‑1 sidewalk implementation.
