Ashwaubenon Board of Review sends Cabela’s assessment objection to circuit court after denying phone testimony request

The Village of Ashwaubenon Board of Review voted June 11, 2025, to send a property assessment objection filed by Cabela’s directly to circuit court after denying the company’s request to testify by telephone.

Board members discussed that Cabela’s had filed a waiver to bypass the Board hearing and proceed straight to circuit court; staff confirmed the parcel’s objection had been in circuit court previously. The Board considered a separate request from Cabela’s to testify by telephone or submit a sworn written statement. A motion was made and seconded to deny the telephone appearance request; the denial carried. The Board then voted to move the Cabela’s request to circuit court; the motion carried.

During discussion, staff explained the Board’s role in documenting materials submitted by appellants so a record exists if a case proceeds to circuit court. Some trustees said the paperwork felt excessive when a matter is already headed for court but acknowledged the documentation requirement is state-mandated. After approving the waiver to circuit court, the Board suspended rules, took a brief recess and later reconvened. Upon reconvening, members moved to receive the completed assessment roll and recognize the signed assessor affidavit by motion, which was approved.

The Board concluded its session and adjourned after completing the scheduled review activity.
