Public hearing opened on McDonaldorp. request for two additional wall signs at Twin Lakes site

The council opened a public hearing on a variance request by McDonald's USA LLC seeking two additional building wall signs at a Twin Lakes Planned Unit Development location. Planning staff said the PUD presently allows one wall sign per tenant with an exterior public entrance and recommended approval with conditions requiring all signs to comply with the city's sign ordinance.

City planner Hugh Blackstock explained the variance would permit the McDonald's tenant to have three building signs on the structure while the site will retain a monument sign along the frontage. "With this variance, they would have a total of 3 signs on the building," Blackstock said. He added that planning and zoning recommended approval with conditions that the signs comply with the sign ordinance.

No members of the public spoke in opposition at the work session; the public hearing was opened and closed at the meeting and the item will be considered at the appropriate voting meeting. The planner and staff noted that PUD restrictions differ from the standard sign ordinance and that the variance request is intended to align the tenant signage with typical commercial freestanding locations; staff recommended conditions that ensure compliance with the sign code.
