Vanessa Husky, chair of the Jackson County Justice and Law Enforcement Committee, told the committee on Sept. 8 that members should recommend adoption of a resolution declaring certain county-owned vehicles as surplus property and authorizing their disposal under chapter 11 of the Jackson County Code. "I actually had opportunity to see the vehicles, and I am satisfied," Husky said.
The recommendation matters because declaring property surplus clears legal and administrative steps the county must take before selling or otherwise disposing of county assets. Committee members pressed staff for details about where the vehicles were being stored and whether other departments had vehicles at the same site.
During discussion, a committee member asked whether the stored cars were at the parks department lot. Sylvia Stevenson, chief administrative officer, said that parks has some vehicles but "I can't speak to how many they have and where they're stored," and confirmed that vehicles discussed for the resolution were not tied to the sheriff's office's storage. Husky said she had spoken with the sheriff and that she was satisfied with the storage and removal arrangements.
The chair then moved to recommend adoption; the motion was seconded and the committee voted in the affirmative. The committee recommended Resolution 21994 for adoption, sending the surplus declaration forward for formal consideration by the full governing body.
No public testimony on the item was recorded in the committee discussion. The transcript shows the matter was handled as a committee recommendation; no additional conditions or amendments were recorded.
