Euclid, Ohio — The Euclid Civil Service Commission on July 1 removed multiple candidates from the Euclid Fire Department’s certified eligibility lists, citing a mix of "for cause" reasons and failures to respond to department contacts.
Assistant Chief (Fire) presented three lists. "The first list will be for cause," the assistant chief said, then read names and candidate numbers and said reasons included interview or background issues and lack of required medic training or enrollment. The commission approved motions to remove candidates 79 (Mason Pierpont), 80 (Austin Hungerford), 82 (Robert Bueno DeLuca), 83 (Jacob Wrench), 84 (Deontay Williams), 87 (John Passack), 92 (Vincent Pennington), 98 (Anthony Catuzas), 100 (Seth Rich), 108 (Colton Booth) and 110 (Dylan Piatek) "for cause."
A second motion removed candidates 95 (Logan Shreeves), 99 (James Godshall), 101 (Nicholas Sokolowski), 102 (Matthew Klosky), 103 (Zachary Porch) and 104 (Samuel Disher) from the January 21, 2025 certified list because the department did not receive responses to multiple emails and phone calls.
Why it matters: Removing candidates from a certified eligibility list affects the pool of applicants available for hiring into the fire department and reflects the department’s screening for required certifications and responsiveness during the hiring process.
Votes and record: Commissioners moved and seconded the motions and approved both removals by voice vote. The chair recorded the removals and referenced the January 2025 list as the source. The assistant chief also noted two other candidates had been hired by the department and therefore need not be removed by motion.
Context and next steps: The assistant chief said he could provide individual reason details for each candidate if the commission requested them. The commission recorded the removals and proceeded to other agenda items.
