Pike County Conservation District schedules appliance buyback at five road-lot locations

Charlie Pinson of the Pike County Conservation District briefed the Fiscal Court on the district’s annual appliance buyback program, which the district runs to remove old appliances from ditches, creeks and improper disposal sites.

Pinson said the program will run at five road-lot locations between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. on scheduled dates: Belcher Road lot on Sept. 22; Robinson Creek on Sept. 23; Belfry Road lot on Sept. 24; Phelps Road lot on Sept. 25; and Johns Creek Recycling Center on Sept. 26. He described the per-item fees as $15 for large items, $7.50 for medium items and $5 for small items, and listed accepted items including stoves, refrigerators, washers, dryers, dishwashers, microwaves, deep freezers, air conditioners, heat pumps and water heaters.

Pinson and court members noted the district received grant funding this year to support the program and that participation has declined over several years, which the district views as a positive sign that fewer illegal dumps are occurring. The court and district emphasized that participants must bring a picture ID with a Pike County address; the program is not accepting appliances from businesses or other counties.

Judge Jones thanked Pinson and the conservation district and said the county will promote the schedule through county channels, including POC-TV and social media. No formal court action or vote was required for the presentation.
