Log cabin pantry proposal divides commissioners; design, location and safety concerns prompt request for in-person community meeting

Commissioners debated whether to place a community pantry, including a refrigerator for perishable food, inside the planned Log Cabin facility at North Shore Park during a multi-department presentation on Sept. 9.

Housing staff said a community pantry would require dedicated electrical capacity for refrigeration, shelving, hand-wash sanitation, waste receptacles, ongoing staffing or volunteer supervision, and possibly security to reduce vandalism. Capital Improvements staff said adding a refrigerator to the Log Cabin interior would not alter the building’s design if included early, but moving the pantry to another location could require additional design work and due diligence.

Several commissioners and residents urged caution. One commissioner said an open fridge in a park could attract encampment or criminal activity and preferred locating the pantry inside an existing staffed community center (South Shore or North Shore community centers) or otherwise ensuring supervised hours. Other commissioners said they supported a pantry that serves food-insecure residents who live in homes but face food insecurity, and asked staff to explore alternative locations and administration models, including partnerships with nonprofits.

As an immediate next step the committee asked for a face-to-face community meeting in North Beach to hear resident input and allow a broader discussion of location, design and management before finalizing whether and where to place a fridge and pantry. The item was left open to return with more detailed options.
