Garfield County staff will move forward with filling the Rifle library board vacancy before the end of the year, but commissioners directed that the appointee will still be required to participate in the regular appointment process later in the year.
County counsel told the board that the library system had asked that the Rifle appointment be moved up so the appointee could participate in the library board’s budget discussions and planned remodel work. Counsel said the county’s 2024 resolution currently controls the appointment process, but the library wanted an earlier appointment; counsel told the board that an early appointment would still require the appointee to come back through the annual appointment process at year end.
The nut graf: commissioners agreed to advertise and proceed with interviews to fill the Rifle seat sooner rather than later; staff said the advertising and interview schedule would require several weeks, so the likely interview window would be mid‑October with an appointment expected in November and a re‑interview in December as required under county resolution.
County staff noted the Rifle board’s urgency was tied to its budget planning and an anticipated remodel. The board directed staff to place an advertisement immediately to begin the recruitment and to schedule interviews for county commissioners to conduct. The board also authorized staff to proceed with the normal advertising and appointment schedule for the end of the year so the seat is reviewed with the rest of the library board appointments.
